William Lombardy Benefit Tournament

On January 21 GM Rev. William Lombardy Benefit was hosted in Palatine, IL. With a remarkable turnout of 54 players, almost 60 registered and an amazing 23 people played in Open Division.
Our day started out in unbelievable style where our facility allowed one of their classrooms to be utilized for a meet and greet to spend time with Rev. Lombardy. Rev. Lombardy who not only won US Open Championship three times and was the only undefeated World Junior Champion (11-0) in 1957, a feat that has never been repeated.
Bronfeyn Grabs January Evanston Tri-Level Gold

With both Ken Wallach and Albert Chow taking two draws, Daniel Bronfeyn's 3.5/4 was the highest score in the January 21 Evanston Tri-Level's Gold Section.
Bronfeyn drew FM Albert Chow in the third round, while US Chess Master Wallach drew his final two matches against Roman Kowalysko and Zach Coffman. Chow also drew Kowalysko in the final round.
Six players finished with 3.0/4 points in the 28-player section including Wallach, Chow, Kowalysko, Coffman along with Jordan Cohen and Marissa Li.

Nobody's perfect -- and 2016 was far from a perfect year.
The final event on the Illinois chess docket for 2016 demonstrated that adage in more ways than one.
North Boone High School coach Glen Gratz and Nequa Valley player Alex Lim battled to a time-influenced but theoretical draw in the first round of the 2016 Northern Illinois Wrap Up hosted by the DeKalb Chess Club.
Both players went on to win their other two matches to claim top honors in the Open section with matching 2.5/3's. Overall 39 participated in three sections.
South Suburban Chess Wars XVIII

On November 20, 2016, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted Chess Wars XVIII.
Although the ICA was holding the Illinois Class Championships 44 miles away, we had this tournament in consideration for those for those living in closer proximity.
Sam Henderson once again was the first place winner with Leroy Sims and this writer tied for second and third place.
However, newcomer, Ethan Salazar scored the upset of the day as he defeated Henderson in the last round.
