Henderson Grand Champion of Star Wars XV; Zhang Wins Open

On August 20, 2016, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted Chess Wars XV. Richard Zhang, the eventual Open Winner “whupped” the organizer in the first round to win the Bounty Hunter Prize of the day!
 
In the U1650 division, Joseph “the Great” Hooks took 1st place with Richard Lewis and the tournament organizer taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
 
In the U1250 Section, Philadelphia visitor Sean Pry took 1st place, followed by James Marchert Sr. (2nd) and Margery Allen (3rd).
 

A Plea For Tournament Civility

 

The South Suburban Chess Club’s Hoopla Blitz on June 17th was a well-organized and well-run event. However, I am compelled to mention a couple curiosities.

During pre-tournament announcements of organizer Wayne Ellice, there was significant chatter and even some chess piece movement.

Wayne, ever the gentleman, remained calm, and tried to continue his announcements despite the background noise.

23 Compete at St Charles May Quick Chess

St Charles Chess Club held a quick tournament on 5/12/2016 with a time control of Game/10 and a 3-second delay.

The five-round event had a great turnout with 23 players.

The tournament was won by first-time club attendee JULIO LARA, who had a nice quick-rating jump from 1689 to 1815.

Second place was nabbed by club president JEFF WIEWEL and third place went to MARIANO ACOSTA .

V. Oberai Wins Lozano Spring Scholastic; Lara Nabs Classic

 

With a perfect five-for-five outing, third-grader Vikram Oberai has won the 2016 Lozano Spring Scholastic, held at the Rudy Lozano Branch of the Chicago Public Library on May 7.

The free non-rated event honored chess moms -- and mothers everywhere -- as players crafted Mothers Day cards between rounds.

Andrey Novikov, Vikram's final round victim, took second place among Grades 2-3 competitors while Virkam's brother, Aditya, took third place. Both Andrey and Aditya compiled 4.0's.

Daniel Roman -- who also fell to Vikram in the fourth round -- had the highest score among Grades 4-5 players.

Saint Charles Chess Club Going Strong in Sixth Decade

 

After an absence of a few years, St. Charles Chess Club has proudly renewed its affiliate membership with the Illinois Chess Association.

The club meets Thursday nights at 7:00pm at the Baker Community Center, where it has been meeting since the 1960's.

During the 1970's the club grew rapidly during the Fischer boom but suffered hard times during the Fischer bust. At one time only three players were attending regularly!

Erv Sedlock took over in the early 1980s and turned things around. For many years the club has had 20+ players coming every week with some nights reaching 40+.
