Chess is Alive And Well in Kankakee: Gresen, Santoro and Lund Are Co-Champions of July's First KCC Open

 

The sign of any good chess tournament is competitive play -- and there was plenty of that in the very first tournament hosted by the Kankakee Chess Club, July 15.

Three players, Evan Gresen, Ryan Santoro and Tim Lund all managed 3.0/4 scores.

The event was directed by Austin Earsley with whom the ICA would love to chat!

Chicago Chess Center Distributes Almost $2,000 in Cash

 

The Chicago Chess Center is still in search of a permanent home but it's been an active organizer of tournaments.

At its June 24 Midsummer event on the UIC campus, 110 participated in three sections.

FM George Li and US Chess Expert Akhil Kalghatgi tied for top honors in the Open section with 3.5/4 scores. Nine players were a half-point back at 3.0.

The CCC reports $1320 was distributed in the Open and $660 in prizes were paid out in the Reserve which saw a three-way tie for first.  Deepak Salian, Monish Bhasin and Elijah Platnick each scored 3.5/4 in the Reserve.

IM Shetty Wins CCC's May Plus-Score 9 Event at UIC

 

With the world's chess community traveling to Illinois for the $100,000 Chicago Open this weekend, warm up events were quite popular.

At the Chicago Chess Center's Plus Score #9 tournament held May 20, International Master Atulya Shetty wasn't able run the table, but he still managed to post a 3.5/4 tally, good enough for first place. Michigan-based Shetty was the clear K-12 National Champion at the 2013 SuperNationals V as a junior.

Hosted at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the event was worth $120 to Shetty, who defeated three opponents rated at least 286 points less than his 2518 rating. The IM also drew Senior Master Robert Perez.

David Rubin Wins 2017 Lozano Spring Classic

 

30 years ago, many readers of this website weren't even born. 

That's about how long David Rubin estimates it's been since he played tournament chess!

After going five-for-five in the May 6 Lozano Spring Classic, hopefully it won't be another 30 years until he plays again!

Adam Bareket placed second with 4.5/5, followed by Roman Kowalysko and Tom Bareket with 4.0's. A four-way tie for fifth place (3.5/5) included Lauro Nava, Malik Brewley, Timothy Liddell and Jake Cinco.
