Nearly 70 Play in Inaugural CCI 2017 Chicago Cup

 

On the 19th and 20th of August 2017 history was made in Chicago, The history I am referring to is the first annual “Chicago Cup” chess tournament. The tournament was held at the luxurious Chicago South Loop hotel, and facilitated by the Chicago Chess Initiative and organized by long-time area player John Porter.

The reason I say historical is two-fold: one, because the southside of Chicago has been a chess desert since the passing of one of our favorite chess organizers and teachers, Tom Fineberg. And two, because it was a FIDE-tournament which means the time controls are set for those rules and that rating system.

Ricky Roman Wins 2017 Lozano Late Summer Tournament; 86 Face-Off in Four Sections At CPL Pilsen Branch in Chicago

 

Whitney Young high schooler Ricky Roman -- a product of the Knight Moves Chess Club -- returned to his roots August 12 at the Lozano Library in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. By virtue of his five-for-five performance, Mr. Roman claimed the championship of the 2017 Lozano Late Summer Classic, and the first place trophy.

A three-way tie for second place included Christopher Gora, Brendan O'Shaughnessy  and Master Raul Piseaux Aillon (who flagged in one match under the rigid Game/30; 5-second delay time control).

Chicago Chess Foundation Names First Executive Director

 

The Chicago Chess Foundation (CCF) has announced the hiring of Eli Rollman as its initial Executive Director.  The CCF was founded in 2014 with the mission of giving every student in Chicago the opportunity to learn, play, and compete in chess at low or no cost.

“We are very excited to bring Eli aboard,” said Benjamin Wong, Principal at Benjamin W. Wong & Associates, Ltd. and President of the CCF Board of Directors.

“(Rollman) has tremendous passion for our mission, and is the right person to lead us forward into our next stage of growth so that we can introduce even more students to the great game of chess. His experience as a lawyer, educator, and leader within the nonprofit sector give him a breadth of perspective that will make him a great asset to CCF.”

King is King at 2017 Elite Open in Naperville

 

With three wins and a final-round draw, Nicholas King won the 2017 Elite Chess Open conducted July 29 in Naperville.

King's 3.5/4 in the Championship section placed him 1/2-point ahead of a three-pack who tied for second place: Zach Coffman, Tom Bareket and Master Tam Nguyen.

The event featured five rated sections, all with four rounds of Game/45 and a five-second delay.  Two non-rated sections -- and a frenzied bughouse competition -- were also offered.

Gratz Wins Rock River Chess Inaugural Tournament

 

USCF Expert Glen Gratz was a late arrival but timely play at the board earned the former North Boone High School coach the championship of the very first Rock River Chess rated tournament.

Chief TD Erik Czerwin secured the Rockford Public Library East Branch location for the event and 39 competed in three sections on July 22.

Gratz posted 3.5/4 while locals Sureshkumar Rajamani and Joseph Hernandez tied for second with 3.0/4 tallies.
