Winick Prevails at Glenwood Club Championship

Starting May 5, concluding on May 21, the Glenwood Chess Club held its inaugural club championship. This was a four round event with Game/45, five-second delay time controls.
One game was held every Tuesday and Thursday with an optional “Make Up Game” on May 19.
Many of us “begged and pleaded” with the Club’s Vice President and tournament organizer, Herbert Ferguson, to include “Runner Up” prizes so that one person would not be the “Sole King of the Hill”!
Herb “stomped and snorted” and announced, “Nope, this is the Club Championship, not the Runner Up Included Club Championship. It's winner take all!"
20 enthusiastic players vied for the title.
Qazi Perfect at 115th Knights Quest

Rafeh Qazi defeated fellow-Expert Robby Hecht in the fourth round to claim top honors at the 115th Knight's Quest, held July 12 in Northbrook.
Alec Feygin prevailed over Howard Cohen in the last round, giving both players 3.0/4 scores (along with Hecht, John Compton and Nathan Fong).
26 competed in the Open Section at a tepid Game/40 pace, boosted by a five-second delay. Overall, 103 players entered one of the tournament's four sections. Crosstables have been published here.
Playing in his first USCF-rated event, Nathan Xu was a perfect 3-0 with a full-point bye in the first round, earning clear first in the Under 1400 section. Eric Helgemo was second at 3.5/4, boosting his rating to the 1250's.
Bennett Joseph Wins Knight Moves Summer Open in Pilsen

No stranger to to the Knight Moves Chess Club and its two decades of competitions, Bennett Joseph nailed down the championship at the KMCC's Summer Open, sweeping all five rounds.
The unrated event was held June 20th at the Lozano Branch of the Chicago Public Library in Pilsen.
A four-way tie for second at 3.5/5 included Fabian Ramon, Ayodele Abejide, Malik Brewley and Mark Jungo. Joseph defeated Ramos in the second round and Abejide in the fourth round.
Middleton Unstoppable at Glenwood Club's Chess Wars

On June 28th, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted its first Chess Wars -- [an event inherited from the South Suburban Chess Club -- hence the listing as Chess Wars IV].
It was a successful tournament; we had a total of 19 players [in the main event]. USCF Crosstables were published here.
Douglas Middleton (3.5) was almost unstoppable; the only blemish on his record was a last round draw to Jon Winick. However, Mr. Middleton fell victim to “Murphy’s Law”. Doug had chosen to enter under the tournament's "rating points only" option [at a reduced entry fee]. Therefore, he was ineligible for the prize distribution.
Dr G's Hosts First "Chess Plus" Event in Urbana

Dr G's first annual Chess Plus Event, held on May 30 at Urbana's Lincoln Square Mall, added up to three-plus hours of chess adventure for more than 20 youngsters, ages 5-12.
Family and friends gathered as the talented youth enjoyed relaxed yet competitive game play and analysis.
Blitz, Speed, Challenge, Puzzles, Demo Debates, Pawns, Knight/Queen -- and Dr G's Treasure Chess (aye, doubloons!) captivated the audience.
