Starting May 5, concluding on May 21, the Glenwood Chess Club held its inaugural club championship. This was a four round event with Game/45, five-second delay time controls.
One game was held every Tuesday and Thursday with an optional “Make Up Game” on May 19.
Many of us “begged and pleaded” with the Club’s Vice President and tournament organizer, Herbert Ferguson, to include “Runner Up” prizes so that one person would not be the “Sole King of the Hill”!
Herb “stomped and snorted” and announced, “Nope, this is the Club Championship, not the Runner Up Included Club Championship. It's winner take all!"
20 enthusiastic players vied for the title.
Everyone realized that in order to win, we had to knock out the two heavy hitters, Douglas Middleton and Jon Winick.
Middleton was held to a second round draw and was upset by Leroy Sims in the third round, but still finished in third place with 2.5 points.
Jon, on the other hand, casually requested a half-point bye in the first round. This put him at an early disadvantage. However, Winick proceeded to win his next three matches to take the Championship with a 3.5/4 score!
Second place with 3.0 went to Theodore Whittier, who denied the reporter's runner up bid. We were both tied with 2.0 points, going into the last round. (Nice job, Ted)
USCF Crosstables are published here.
Mr. Winick’s Championship Cup Trophy was awarded at the First Glenwood Chess Club Annual Banquet that was held on May 28. Although Jon could not be present at the award ceremony, Mr. Ferguson accepted the Championship Cup, on his behalf!
Both of these events were enjoyable and well received. We look forward to equaling or surpassing the successes of these two events in 2016.
