As India gears up to host the World Chess Championship for the first time, it seems a good time to look around at all that's going on in the literal and metaphorical world of chess. In the Hainan province of China, Ding Liren won the 4th Hainan Danzhou Tournament. 13 year old, Charlize van Zyl, became the youngest South African to become a WIM. Bela Khontenashvili, from Georgia, won the Fondation Neva Women's Grand Prix. Canadian, IM Edward Porper won a GM Norm at the Chicago Open. Egyptian team makes it into World Cup by dominating the African Chess Championship.
Four way tie in It's A Wonderful Life Classic

A four-way tie for first place in the Open Section hardly captures the full picture of the It's A Wonderful Life Classic. The four-round, dual-rated event was held May 18 in DeKalb, attracting 27 competitors.
Warren Junior Scholars Max Zinski and Vincent Do along with Bloomington-Normal area's Scott Schmidt all earned two victories while drawing each other. Naperville North High School Coach Jeff Di Orio lost to Vincent in the second round, but won his three other rounds to grab a spot in this 3.0/4 score group.

In world chess at the 2013 Admiral Niels Juel Cup there was a tie for first between GM Yuri Solodovnichenko (UKR), GM Mikhail Ulibin (RUS) and GM Ivan Sokolov. The Serbian Chess Championship was won by GM Boban Bogosavljevic. Nearby, at the Lithuanian Championships ,GM Darius Zagorskis became the new national champion and WGM Deimante Daulyte easily won the women's championship. The number one player in Australia, Zhou Zong-Yuan, won the 2013 Thailand Open. In Angola, GM Vladislav Tkachiev won the Cuca International Tournaments 2013. Over in Minnesota, IM Bartholomew won the 2013 Okoboji Open.

This month the youngins' take center stage. First off, another teenager gets a GM norm. This time it's a Norwegian. The 2013 Junior Chess Congress has a record turnout. (In case you were wondering the new record is 375.) And the University of Illinois got ready to go to the President's Cup. The final result was that the University of Illinois came in 4th. March 2: The Hoose 2013 Tournament in Bloomington, IL had 191 kids participating in 4 sections. In each section, the sole winner had a perfect record. Here are the winners for each section, Nathan Lee (Lower Primary), Nihar Mothikuru (Upper Primary), Ethan Catt (Elementary), and Balaji Iyengar (Junior High). Crosstables.
