October 2013 Chess Roundup

 September 2: The Naperville Scholastic 6 Tournament in Naperville, IL had three sections and 21 players.  In the U600 there was a three-way tie for first between Vrishank Ramnath, Alexander Novosad, and Vedant Rathi.  In the U900 Section, Daniel Polski went 4/5 and gained 117 points.  In the U1200 Section, Deniz Gulecyuz took first place.  Crosstables.

August 31 to September 2:  The 2013 Annual Illinois Open in Oak Brook had two sections and 139 players.  In the Open Section, Nikola Mitkov and Mesgen Amanov went 5/6 to tie for first place.  In the Reserve Section, Aaron Maney had a single draw to take first place and to gain 95 points.  Crosstables.

Southern Illinois Summer Open

The Southern Illinois Summer Open saw a small but enthusiastic group of 16 players on August 17 at the Community Center in Salem. 3 rounds were fought in Swiss format without sudden-death, with only one draw in 23 games. Crosstable

The big surprise was the performance by Edward Baur (St Louis, MO), who went 3-0 with considerably higher rated opponents, only 2-1/2 months after heart surgery. A well-known and popular youth chess coordinator, Ed gained 119 USCF rating points in this event. He was joined in a 3-0 score by Rodney Vaughn (St. Louis).

Elite Chess Summer Open

On August 11th, players everywhere from Peoria, IL to Milwaukee, WI descended onto the Naperville Campus of DePaul University for the first ever Elite Chess Summer Open. With both rated and scholastic unrated sections, the tournament appealed to a wide audience. The event was a great success with just under 80 rated and unrated players competing for cash or trophy prizes. Strong expert player Steffen Klug took home the $140 first prize with a perfect score in the Championship Division.

Bradley Summer Open Celebrates 50 Years

The first 50 years of the Bradley Summer Open is now complete and next year we start on the next 50 years. The BSO is the longest running college sponsored chess tournament in the country.

Co-winners of this year's BSO were masters Pete Karagianis and Tam Nguyen, both finishing with 3 wins and a draw in 4 games, followed closely by master Tim McEntee with 2 wins and 2 draws, having drawn with both winners.

The Reserve section was won by Patrick Li with a perfect 4-0. Patrick's rating is rapidly increasing, he has now gained over 300 points since this April. Patrick is in 7th Grade at Dunlap Middle School.

Chicago Chess Center Preview Open Winners Aren't the Usual Suspects

June 29 was a day for newcomers, up-and-comers and comebacks. David Shiner, a Shimer College associate dean coming off a 10-year hiatus from rated chess, won first place in our preview open at the Illinois Institute of Technology, with a score of 3.5/4. With only three prior rated games to his name, Armando Rodríguez took second with 3.0/4 (in a tie with the house player, Bill Brock). Young player Mark Jungo, a member of the Knight Moves Chess Club at the Rudy Lozano Branch Library in Pilsen, placed third with 2.5/4, scoring an upset win over his mentor, Héctor Hernández, in the first round.
