In world chess at the 2013 Admiral Niels Juel Cup there was a tie for first between GM Yuri Solodovnichenko (UKR), GM Mikhail Ulibin (RUS) and GM Ivan Sokolov. The Serbian Chess Championship was won by GM Boban Bogosavljevic. Nearby, at the Lithuanian Championships ,GM Darius Zagorskis became the new national champion and WGM Deimante Daulyte easily won the women's championship. The number one player in Australia, Zhou Zong-Yuan, won the 2013 Thailand Open. In Angola, GM Vladislav Tkachiev won the Cuca International Tournaments 2013. Over in Minnesota, IM Bartholomew won the 2013 Okoboji Open.
Closer to home, Mayor Rahm Emanuel attended the All Girls Nationals. And here is a listing of events from around the state.
March 23 to April 1: The Naperville International Women's Tour Tournament drew 10 women from around the country. The nine round event had Anna Styazhkina finishing without a loss and 7/9 points. She gained 202 rating points. Crosstables.
April 6: In Bloomington, IL the Iexcell Open/Scholastic April 2013 Tournament drew 14 players to this 3 section event. In the Under 600 Section, two players (Rujuta Durwas and Gunnar Holtermann) tied for first with 4/5 points. In the Under 1200, Garrett Trimble swept all the rounds to take first place. In the Open Section, Joseph Alford may have won first place with 4.5/5.0 but he lost 5 rating points for the tournament. Crosstables.
April 7: The April Game-45 Tournament in Skokie, IL drew 35 players to this two section event. In the Open Section, Boyan Angelov took first place and increased his provisional rating to 2237. In the U1500 Section, James Collins and Stefan Musikic had near perfect records but both drew to the same person, Matthew Pifko. Crosstables.
April 9: The Quad City Quads April 2013 Tournament in Moline, IL drew 8 players. In the Open Section, Luis Peralta took first. In the Reserve 1 Section, Benjamin Nordick won all his games. Crosstables.
April 12: The NYCC 2013 Tournament in Naperville, IL had 38 players. In the U1400 Section, Matthew Tang won both his games. In the U1000 Section, Alan Wei was the sole first place winner. In the U700 Section, Alex Zhang, David He and Brian Zheng all tied for first by winning two games out of two. In the U600A Section, David Chu beat Temur Mangushev in the third round to take first. In the U600B Section, Benjamin Myung won both his games to take first. Crosstables.
April 13: The Elgin Academy Tournament drew 56 players. In the Primary Section, Nathaniel Graf took first place and gained 209 provisional points. In the Elementary Section, Jayant Maheshwari took first place with 4.5/5.0. In the MS HS Adult Section, Orlan Smith won all five games and gained 59 points. Crosstables.
April 13: The 54th Kumbaya Tournament was held in Skokie, IL and had 30 players and three sections. In the 1200 Above Section, Michael Geohas took first place with 2.5/3.0. In the U1200 Section, Nathan Salahi had 3.5/4.0 points. In the U700 Section, John Osburn had the only unbeaten streak in the section. Crosstables.
April 13: The April Game-60 in Skokie had 33 players. Kenneth Wallach the lone master in the open section finished with 3.5/4.0 after drawing against expert Gregory Bungo. Bharat Chandar won all games in the U1500 Section. Crosstables.
April 14: The TMCC123 Tournament had 8 players participating in this Chicago Event. Robert Michalak won all three rounds. Crosstables.
April 14: The 88th Quest Tournament in Northbrook, IL had 91 players. In the Open Section, David Korobov beat a couple higher rated opponents to gain 91 points and take first place. In the U1400 Section, Jonathan Lee, won all his games. In the U1000 Section, Josh Torres and Riley Wilson both won all their games to tie for first. In the U600 Section, Grace Clopton won all four games and increased provisional rating to 654. Crosstables.
March 25 to April 15: The Dual Duel G30 Tournament drew 13 players to Peoria. Adam Lonn took first place with 6.5/8.0. Crosstables.
April 20: The OP -April '13 Tournament in Orland Park had 7 players. Deniz Gulecyuz won all four games to take first place. Crosstables.
April 21: The Naperville Open 2 had 38 players and four sections. In the U600 Vishwa Salem won all five games and not only took first place but gained 301 rating points. In the U1000 Section Adam Bareket pulled off a smiliar feat by winning five games and gaining 304 rating points. In the U1400 Section Jack Bradley went 4/4 to win first. In the Open Section Kymantas Alborovas beat a couple higher rated players to be the sole individual to be undefeated. Crosstables.
April 20 to 21: The Greater Peoria Open drew 38 players to this dual section event. In the Open Section lone master Petros Karagianis went undefeated. In the Reserve Section, Scott Schmidt beat Randy Crum in round 5 to take first place. Crosstables.
April 27: The April Chess at WY Tournament in Chicago had 20 Scholastic players. In the K-2 Section, John Bielobradek finished 3.5/4.0 for first place. In the K-8 U800 Section Jeremy Nohel swept all four rounds to finish first. In the K-8 Open there was a three way tie for first between Abdel Raoul, Adam Pastor, and Joseph Buklis. Crosstables.
April 26 to 28: The All-Girl National Championships in Chicago had 280 players. The Under 20 Section had Anupama Rajendra edging out a couple higher rated players to take first place. In the Under 18 Section, Lilia Poteat lost only to second place finisher Akshita Gorti in the fourth round and finished in first place with 5.0/6.0. In the Under 16 Section, Claudia Munoz was an unstoppable force winning all of her games. In the Under 14 Section, Ashritha Eswaran also pulled a six win streak to finish first. In the Under 12 Section, two players had one draw and five wins to tie for first. They were Samritha Palakollu and Vivian Cao-Dao. In the Under 10 Section, only one person finished with 5.5/6.0 points and that was Naomi Bashkansky. In the Under 8 Section, Aksithi Eswaran came in first and gained 115 points. Crosstables.
April 27 to 28: The 18th NA Amateur in Skokie, IL had 30 Players. In the Open Section, Steven Szpisjak swept the field and finished undefeated. In the Under 1500 Section, David Wallach and Matthew Ward tied for first. Crosstables.
