Furfine, Ramnath Perfect at 2015 K-8 Championships at ISU, Prabu and Mardov Also Clear Winners at 6.5/7

571 competed in four sections at the 2015 Illinois K-8 Championships completed March 8 in Normal, IL. All four sections had at least 100 entries with the Upper Primary (Grades 2-3) fielding 182 competitors.
Jacob Furfine defeated his bughouse partner Vincent Do in the seventh round to claim the Junior High championship. The two USCF Experts had partnered to win the bughouse competition held March 6.
Illinois hosts seven juniors rated above 2000 who were eligible for this competition, but Furfine and Do were the only two entering. In fact, Illinois' top-rated players from ages 7 through 12 (as of February ratings) were all notably absent from the event.

Chiddix Junior High of Normal won both the sixth and eighth grade championships at the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) championships concluded February 28.
The two-day event was held at the Bone Center on the campus of ISU in Normal. Results are posted here.
Chiddix took second in the 7th grade competition, losing out to Bloomington Evans, 27.0-25.5.
Naperville North Claims 2014-15 IHSA Crown Over Stevenson, USCF-Unrated Yuki Nojima of Hersey Lone Perfect Board One

With five boards completed in the seventh round, Stevenson needed just one more win from one of its three top boards to secure the 2015 IHSA title.
Stevenson (of Lincolnshire) and Naperville North were the final two undefeateds heading into the last games of the two-day tournament in Peoria.
But when North's Bradley Guan managed a draw against Lincolnshire's Alex Bian on Board One, and Mark Reed and Matthew Wu prevailed on Boards Two and Three, it was the Naperville team claiming the 2015 IHSA Chess Championship.
7 High Schools Undefeated Heading Into IHSA Finals Day 2

With four rounds under their belts, seven Northern Illinois squads remain undefeated at the 2015 IHSA Finals in Peoria. A record 146 8-person teams have entered the competition (with up to 4 alternates allowed per squad).
Lincolnshire's Stevenson High School holds the top tiebreak after trouncing Fremd High School (Palatine) 68-0 in round four. Freshmen are playing their first three boards, with Alex Bian, James Wei and Conrad Oberhaus all posting perfect 4-0's so far.
Junior Allen Guo, Senior Philip Engstrom, Sophomore Rahul Dhiman and Sophomore Adit Ghosh are all perfect at boards four through seven. Stevenson's lone blemish was a third round loss on board eight.
Also in round four, New Trier (Winnetka) upended IMSA (Aurora) 51-17.
Ranchero, McMurtrie, Szal Atop Wheaton Christian Scholastic, Gran and Richards Win Junior High Section, 158 Compete

A field of 158 faced off in the Wheaton Christian Grammar Scholastic February 7.
In the 37-player Junior High section Brenden Gran and William Richards both posted perfect 4.0 scores.
William Cahill took third place with a second-round draw against Elizabeth Peterson and three wins. He enhanced his USCF rating 72 points, surpassing 1000 for the first time. William had won the K-1 section in the 2014 edition of the tournament, playing up three sections this year.
A six-pack tied for fourth place in the top section including Joshua Dean, Nathan Salahi, Jack Tegart, Sarah Grandy, Simon Evans and Matthew Nickel.
