Before the main event began -- and overlapping it -- five of the players participated in an international online tournament with comeptitors from China (2 teams), Russia (3 teams), France and Germany. The Illinois players came in fourth out of eight teams and the overlap with the local event meant that some players were given two byes.
The event featured an appearance by chess legend Anatoly Karpov who has licensed his name to the Naperville-based academy.
