The first Illinois High School Individual and Medley Championship held since the mid-1970s was held February 27 - 28 at Maine South High School in Park Ridge.
31 high school students and eight teams competed for state champion titles. The tournament featured Game/100 time controls over five rounds.
In the individual competition, Expert Jonathan Hrach took the 2016 Illinois High School Individual Champion title with a perfect 5.0 score followed by New Trier's John Compton with 4.0 / 5. Eight others tied for third place with 3.5 / 5.
From a team perspective, Highland Park High School took the 2016 Illinois High School Medley Team Champion title with 12.5 points, ahead of Maine South High School which tallied 10.5 points.
In the final round, Highland Park's Zach Warsh beat Maine South's William Olafsson to secure the team title. If the result had been a win for Olafsson, both schools would have ended with 11.5 points, and Maine South had the better tiebreak.
Naperville North High School, Andrew High School (Tinley Park), and New Trier High School (Winnetka) finished 3rd through 5th respectively.
Trophies and plaques were awarded to the top 20 individuals and all eight teams with more than one entry.
