Goudy teammates Daniel Percastegui and Muhammad Balai faced off in a playoff game to decide the Advanced Section of the February 20 YCFC / CCF tournament. Percastegui prevailed in the five-minute blitz match to claim the top trophy. Both had perfect 5-for-5 days before that, ahead of an eight-way pack of 4.0 scorers. The duo led Goudy to the Advanced team championship, aided by Mohammad Rahman's 3.0 tally.
Avi Kaplan, Ryan Wong and Umair Ahmed placed third through fifth on tiebreaks in that 4.0 score group. Others with 4.0 included Jimmy Nguyen, Rob Parkel, brothers Aditya and Vikram Oberai, and Jana Zivanovic. Thanks to the 4.0's from Ahmed, Nguyen, and Zivanovic, the Bateman team took second place hardware.
In five sections, 422 competed at Rickover Naval Academy, the most ever for a YCFC event.
Earle STEM won the Novice 7-8 section with 17.0, ahead of Kinzie and 15 other teams with multiple entrants. Josuha Johnson's perfect score and Tyrone Deller's 4.5/5 lead the way, aided by Semaj Lowe's 4.0 and Devion Duke's 3.5.
Johnson claimed the individual championship with teammate Deller second on tiebreaks, edging Ogden's Tony Martin who placed third. Eight players finished with 4.0's.
Novice 5-6 competition saw a playoff between Lenart's Philip Kujawa and Angel Nunez of Burbank with Kujawa prevailing. 12 players tied for third with 4.0's, with Bateman's Christopher Salas posting the top tiebreak in that 100-player section.
Edgebrook (15.5) prevailed over Bateman and Goudy (both with 14.5's). Bateman nabbed the second place team trophy on tiebreaks. Edgebrook's Armando Besa, Amanda Ortiz and Andrew Ahn paced the team with 4.0's, assisted by Benjamin Bologna's 3.5.
Skinner North narrowly defeated Bateman 16.0-15.5 in the Novice 3-4. 19 multi-player teams competed in the largest section of the tournament where 121 entered. Again, a playoff was necessary with Lenart's Menzi Yang defeating Aurora Chess Club's Anisha Oberai after both players finished five-for-five. Ivan Suarez and Rishi Sandrana were both 4.5/5 with Suarez earning the third place trophy on the fourth level of tiebreaks! 16 players tied for fifth with 4.0/5 scores!
Skinner North also won the Novice K-2 section despite having the fewest entrants of the top six teams. Burbank, Decatur and Waters all finished with 12.5's with Burbank winning the second place trophy with the highest tiebreaks.
Asha Lulla of Skinner North defeated Aurora Chess Club's Ria Raj in a playoff to claim the top trophy after both finished with 5.0 points. This was Raj's first time competing with the YCFC. 9 players tallied 4.0's.
The next YCFC / CCF event is April 9th at Oriole Park.
