Ricky Roman won all five of his matches to top all comers in the age 14-and-under section of the 22nd Chicago Latino Championships.
The one-day tournament was organized by Hector Hernandez and was hosted at the Lozano Branch of the Chicago Public Library in the historic Pilsen neighorhood November 29. 31 players competed in the scholastic section of the tournament which has a powerful legacy dating back to 1993. Results for the Open Section were unavailable as of presstime.
Roman defeated Zabdiel Green in the final round to seal the championship. Green finished in a four-way tie for second with Layla Rodriguez, Christopher Gora and Terasence Mitten.
Green received the second place trophy with the highest tiebreaks, defeating Rodriguez in the fourth round and Gora in the third round.
Judah Green and Yanzhou Wei tied for sixth place with 3.5 scores. There was a seven-way tie for eighth place with three of those players earning trophies.
Based on the top four scores -- if available -- Kinzie won the team championship with a 10.5 total, lead by Samantha Glowacki and Izella Ortiz, both with 3.0 tallies. Sacred Heart consisting of the three Green brothers, Zabdiel, Judah and Noah, took second place with a 9.5 result.
The event was not submitted to the USCF for rating but was generally conducted in accordance with USCF rules.
Organizer Hernandez expressed appreciation to the event's sponsor, Tampico Beverages, who was on hand at the Lazano Branch to quench the thirst of tournament participants.
