On Sunday October 23rd, Dynamic Chess, Inc. hosted the first in a series of eight monthly scholastic tournaments at Whitney Young High School in Chicago. This central Chicago location attracts chess players from across the city as well as the suburbs. Participants not only compete for tournament trophies for the top five places but also the overall series championship which earns the top finisher in each section a free entry into a Dynamic Chess summer chess camp.
On this Sunday, thirty-one participants enjoyed a friendly yet competitive chess tournament. In the K-2 section, Jake Joseph of Evanston cruised to a first place finish. Finishing out the top five were Samuel Pastor, Messiah Akhanatan, Jonah Karafiol, and Jeffery Huang.
In the K-5 section, a familiar battle took place in the final round as fellow fifth graders Ricky Roman and Shashank Bala battled for first place. Ricky got the best of his friendly rival on this day and finished with a perfect 4.0, while Shashank finish in second with 3 points. Third place was captured by rising star Stephan Musikic. Only in first grade and coming off a strong showing at the Susan Polgar World Open, in which he finished in third in the K-3 section, Stephan finished with 3 points. Rounding out the top 5 was last years overall K-2 champion Sam Andrews who finished in forth and in fifth came Ryan Wong.
In will be interesting to see how all these young chess players develop throughout the year.
