Congratulations to four young players representing Chess Without Borders, who made a splash in New Jersey this weekend at the National Youth Action tournament, winning first place in K6 Blitz, and sixth place in the K6 main event.
Fourth-graders Akhil and Nikhil Kalghatgi and Jonathan Tan, and third-grader Ranadheer Tripuraneni made up the team. Chess Without Borders is the charitable arm of the Yury Shulman International Chess School in Barrington, which combines community service and philanthropic efforts with chess education. Jonathan, Nikhil and Akhil all scored six out of ten possible points in the blitz tournament, and Ranadheer was right in there with 5.5. On tiebreaks, Akhil won the 7th place individual blitz trophy, Jonathan 8th place, Nikhil 13th place and Ranadheer 17th place. In the main event, the four scored a total of 16 points, finishing just 2.5 points behind the first place team.
