Amid Covid-19, when all tournaments are cancelled and players look to online instead of over-the-board chess, US Chess just published their most recent Top 100 Lists for Girls. This compilation has a cut-off date of March 18, 2020, i.e. predates the restrictions in place due to the coronavirus. Sure enough, many of the female chess players from Illinois featured on these prestigious lists have moved up the rankings since last month.

Just a few highlights:

 

• Eight-year old Mehak Jiandani’s rating went from 955 to 997;
• Sukhi Doddi improved her rank from 95 to 71 and rating from 870 to 953;
• Megan Gansukh gained almost 100 rating points at the Amateur Team North and Oak Park Public Library Free Chess tournaments;
• Fox Valley Chess Club member Ria Raj now sits in 15^th place for girls age 11;
• Sophia Zhao broke 1,500 at the Amateur Team North event;
• Trechelle Williams, one of the triad of girls from St. Ethelreda who have been in local news recently, achieved her highest ranking to date (1184);
• Sarah Ruth Grandy from Wheaton North reached 1446, also her personal best to date;
• Barrington’s Shreya Mangalam increased her impressive rating from 2110 to 2132 with standout wins at the team event and Illinois Youth Invitational and remains Illinois’ highest-rated female player;

A big shoutout to all, and to Mythreyi, Nandini, Shakira, Maggie and Wenjing who moved to the next higher age bracket.
