Record Number of Girls Featured in Top 100 Lists

With a total of 50 girls, Illinois has a record number of female players in the top 100 lists compiled by US Chess. Thirty-six of the players have a rating above 1000 and three—Experts Marissa, Shreya and Miranda—are rated above 2000.
Nandini Prakash and Sukhi Doddi continue to rise up the ranks, with the seven-year olds now in 5th place and 55th place, respectively. This month, Illinois has 6 girls appearing in the Top 100 Age 7. Welcome back, Hili Bareket!
Our group of 8-year olds is headed up by Linda Pham. Linda’s rank at #24 this month does not yet include her good performance at the Jane Addams Memorial and CCC Plus-Score tournaments.
Congratulations to nine-year old Ria Raj who, with two tournaments, went from 1157 (rank 37) to 1334 (rank 17) in one month. Very impressive, Ria!
Speaking of impressive, Merrill Lee’s rating gain from 1030 to 1294 (!!) at the Tim Just Winter Open now earned her a spot in the top-40 nationwide. An excellent accomplishment!
Anisha Oberai went from rank 77 in the group of 10-year olds to rank 47 in the group of 11-year olds with an increase in rating from 1053 to 1260. Happy belated birthday, Anisha and congratulations on your tournament performance.
Sarah Lin now leads the next-higher age category. Sarah has crossed the 1400 threshold and is in 32nd place nationwide with a rating of 1450.
In our small group of 13-year olds, Bateman’s Layla Rodriguez had her rating climb over 1300 for the first time. Ashley Mei Yan (rank 16) is still Illinois’ highest ranked 13-year old female player.
A new teenager in the Top 100 Age 16 group is Faith Isaac. Welcome to the list, Faith!
These lists are based on ratings achieved and processed by the third Wednesday of the prior month, in this case January 17, 2018.
