With a perfect 12-for-12 score, Whitney Young twins Akhil and Nikhil Kalghatgi have won the K-12 Bughouse title at 2017 SuperNationals, their third national bughouse championship!
There was a six-way tie for second place -- and a remarkable three Illinois pairs were in that mix.
On tiebreaks, Highland Park's Joseph Harrigan & Iskender Sonmez nabbed fifth-place hardware, Naperville North's Ajay Balaraman & Marissa Li (yes, women play bughouse too!) earned the sixth-place trophy and WY's Matthew Stevens & Ricky Roman garnered seventh-place.
Akhil and Nikhil were also a perfect 10-for-10 in bughouse at the 2016 Junior High Nationals in Indianapolis -- and won their first bughouse national title at the 2016 High School Championships in Atlanta.
In K-9 Bughouse competition, Middle Schoolers Aydin Turgut and Jason Daniels earned third place outright with 10.0/12 -- only a point behind the co-champions who scored 11.0.
53 pairs competed in this year's K-12 Bughouse while 55 entered the K-9's.
70 are entered in the K-6 Bughouse with several Illinois teams in the mix for trophies.
Stay tuned for more side event updates as they become available -- the SuperNationals themselves kick off Friday.
(Thanks to Dr. Sunil Kalghatgi for the initial report!)
