Moos1 webBy the narrowest of margins, 10.0 to 9.5, Skinner North edged Edison Gifted for top team honors in the Elementary School division of the 2016 Cops and Kids Tournament.

The October 8 National Chess Day event was hosted at Moos Elementary School on Chicago's northside and was the second incarnation of the event organized by Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation.

Jack Heller contributed his perfect 4-for-4 score along with 3.0's from brothers Andy and Leon Cao. Justin Chen of Chicago Grammar School was also 4.0/4, with Jack earning the higher tiebreak to claim the championship.

3.5's were posted by Collin Jung of Edison and Zayd Syed of Quest Academy, ahead of a nine-way pack who tied for fifth place at 3.0. 48 competed in the section. Zayd is pictured below with a couple of the Chicago police officers who helped to make the event a success.

In the 55-player combined Junior High / High School cection, Alex Liu, Layla Rodriguez, Minh Thomas and Harry Heller all posted 4.0/4's, ahead of a 12-pack of 3.0 scorers. By tiebreak, Alex took the first place trophy.

Lead by Layla's 4.0 and 3.0's from Jeremy Enciso, Leonard Rionaula, and Jim Nguyen, Bateman School was the Junior High team champions, posting 10 points (only the top three scores counted to the team total). See picture below right, accompanied by Coach Adam Geisler.

Kinzie took second place with 9.0, with seven different players posting 3.0's: Cristian Luna, Gabby Cisneros, Alex and Elizabeth Codamon, Samantha Glowacki, Izella Ortiz,and Stefania Patel-Garcia.
