Defending K-6 National Champion Joseph Wan went 4-0 at the 2014 Quad Cities Classic claiming the first place trophy and over $100 in prize money. In doing so, he defeated both competing 2014 Illinois Tour participants, Aidan Carey in the first round and Jason Daniels in the third round.
Wan, currently the 30th-ranked 12 year-old in the country, recently moved to Iowa City, IA from Nebraska. His father, who teaches accounting at Western Illinois University, suggests we may be seeing more of Wan at Illinois events.
The Quad Cities Classic was held October 25 at the Moline Dispatch Annex, hosted by the Illowa Chess Club (Get it: Illinois plus Iowa = Illowa?) Crosstables are available here. 14 played in the Open. Over $500 was distributed in prize money in two sections.
Steven Patterson took second at 3.5/4 with a fourth round 1/2 point bye. Daniels tied for third with John Hartmann, both with 3.0/4.
In the Reserve, Illinois junior Ben Nordick posted an undefeated 3.5/4 result giving him the championship a full-point ahead of a three-pack of 2.5's: Andrew Kozich, Nathan Chen and Matthew Power. 13 competed in the U1400 section.
Another Iowan junior, Anish Lodh, although eligible to have played in the Reserve, had the highest score of U1600 (and U1400) entrants in the Open, posting a respectable 2.0/4 tally with wins over a pair of Class C competitors. Lodh raised his rating 63 points to 1452 from the event.
In the unofficial family competition, Ben and father Gary Nordick (who served as Chief TD - allowing him to play only one round) had 4.5 points, Jason and father Scott Daniels (who played only two rounds) posted 4.0 points, siblings Anish and Anjali Lodh compiled 3.0 points. But the clear family champions were the Power clan with father Matthew and sons Josiah and Clive earning 6.0 points.
The 2014 Illinois Tour's 12th and final event is the Illinois Class, November 23.
