Cardinale to receive ICA’s top honor on July 22

Michael Cardinale, a mainstay of efforts in recent years to strengthen the chess program and provide competitive opportunities for low income students in Chicago, will be honored by the Illinois Chess Association on July 22 as the recipient of this year’s Natalie W. Broughton Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is ICA’s top honor.
A banquet to honor Cardinale will be held at 2 PM on the 22nd at Maggiano’s Little Italy Restaurant, 516 N. Clark St., Chicago. Tickets are $40 for adults ($24 ages 5-11, $50/$30 after July 15) and may be purchased online at http://www.kingregistration.com/event/icabanquet18.

National Elementary Championship Tournament Underway in Nashville

The National Elementary Championship is underway at the Gaylord Opryland and Convention Center in Nashville, TN. Seventy-eight (78) players from Illinois are participating in this K-6 championship event.
The tournament runs from May 10 through May 13. The Bughouse and Blitz side-events were held on Thursday May 10th. The main event, a 7 round G90/d5 tournament runs from May 11-13.
Illinois Youth Invitational Selects Illinois Representatives to Denker, Barber, Girls and SPF Girls Invitationals

Thirty-two of Illinois top scholastic players participated in the Illinois Youth Invitational Tournament on May 4-6 in Schaumburg. This 3-section tournament determined which players will have the honor of representing the state of Illinois in 4 prestigious invitational tournaments to be held this summer.
Twelve high school players competed in the Denker section to select the player for the Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions. Warren Junior Scholar David Peng, a Sophomore at New Trier High School was the first place winner, with 4.5 of 5 points. Warren Junior Scholar Zhaozhi George Li, a Senior at Illinois Math and Science Academy, took second place, with a score of 3.5 of 5 points. David and George both recently returned from the National High School Tournament where they also took 1st and 2nd place in the championship section.
