Pinoy of Chicago Wins the 2010 USAT (North)

The team comprised of Filipinos spearheaded by IM Angelo Young, FM Camilo Pangan, NM Florentino Inumerable, Expert Rene Ancheta and Virgillio Forro won the US Amateur Team Championship North with a total of 4.5 pts. /5 games. They gave only one draw and never looked back from beginning to end winning match after match. Crosstable
In the first round they were undefeated against a group of young college students (The left hand of God), then in round 2 routed Downers chess club by a score of 3-1. Next round they almost blanked the R3P0 by winning 3.5-.5 and in round 4 they drew a rejuvenated CICL chess team exchanging blows on board 3 and 4. In the final round they rebounded in a style with an impressive win against the University of Chicago, while the CICL ( the only team that could catch them) only drew the team of GM Yermolinsky ( Peasants of Midwest) to take the second place.
1st board- IM Angelo Young 1982 Philippine junior champion and one of the record holders in the US chess league scored a reasonable 4 pts. He was undefeated and managed two draws against NM’s Steve Tenants and Jeremy Kane.
2nd board - FM Camilo Pangan who stop playing chess for awhile due to his hectic work schedule managed to regain his chess ability by playing countless games online.
3rd board -Florentino Inumerable – A well known in the Chicago chess community by being a giant spoiler. A former PESO champion gave the Pinoy chess team a crucial win in the final round.
4th board- Rene Ancheta - The 2006 Western (open) chess champion was in the best shape besting all his opponents in elegant way and finally the team coach 5th board - Virgilio Forro – A former PESO champion too, Was the one who helped the team prepare each round and gave the team the big boast.
Ethelbert (Bert) Gazmen –Team manager and a chess player himself, was the main person behind the team’s success. He gave the team the go signal to play and provided them all the team financial needs. Bert is also known as “the godfather of Filipino chess in Illinois”, helping Filipino chess players ever since.
