Summer Chess Camps were recently held at St. Ignatius College Prep and De La Salle Institute.
Nineteen students participated in the St. Ignatius program, including four incoming freshmen. A tournament was held at the end of the week to measure improvement made by the students. The top five players were: Dominic Millar, Gavin Sexton, Miguel Haro, Aarav Rajput and Logan Lin, first through fifth places respectively. Trophies were also earned by the top player in each grade, fifth through ninth. Medals were awarded to players not earning a trophy.
De La Salle’s camp had twelve participants, grades sixth through ninth. On the last day of the camp a tournament was held to test the campers’ newfound skills. The top three players were: Benjamin Reisinger, Miguel Haro and Tony Thomas, first through third places respectively. Medals were awarded to players not earning a trophy.
Also on the last day, the campers had fun playing “Bughouse” chess with De La Salle Chess Team members -and camp assistants- Jocelyn Argueta and Angel Bañuelos.
“Bughouse” is a popular chess variant played on two chessboards by four players in teams of two. Normal chess rules apply, except that captured pieces on one board are passed on to the teammate on the other board, who then has the option of putting these pieces on their board.
