Chess and Social Entrepreneurship
- Details
Chess Without Borders, a non-profit chess program, has successfully raised almost $100,000 for local and global charities while educating hundreds of students. This chess program was created by an Illinois chess player, Rishi Sethi who invited 2008 US Champion GM Shulman to help him run the program. Both co-founded Chess Without Borders with the mission of combining chess education with service and philanthropy.
Hundreds of Illinois chess players have demonstrated that many entrepreneurial skills evolve from addressing challenges facing chess players. They have used their imagination, initiative, calculation, insight, planning and drive to design projects that make an impact on society. One such project was to raise funds for surgery for a little girl who was the victim of severe burns. Another project that was an offshoot of this was to establish a computer center in the slums of Delhi, India. Chess Without Borders continues to provide funds for educating this little girl as well as running the computer center.
For the 6th year now Chess Without Borders is hosting a chess tournament at Hough School in Barrington, Illinois where 100% of the proceeds will be donated towards these 2 long standing charities. GM Shulman with many youth and community volunteers will donate their services to make this possible.
Please help us accomplish our goals by playing in the tournament or joining us for a meal on Feb 22nd.
