With more than three dozen Illinois youth already signed up in four sections, the 2017 Illinois K-8 Championships will be attracting over 500+ (maybe 600 or 700?) chess players from throughout the state, March 10-12.
Bloomington Normal Area Scholastic Chess -- which provides an incredible model of how a community chess organization can be run -- will once again host of the US Chess rated championship. BNASC was awarded the event based on a competitive bid submitted to the ICA in 2016.
Due to anticipated renovations at the nearby Bone Center on the ISU campus, this year's event will be held entirely at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Normal.
All entrants play seven rounds (with the possibility of a bye in one round when there are uneven numbers). Even for a state championship, there is no elimination!
And it's open to all Illinois youth -- even if they've never played in a US Chess-rate event before. Of course, the player should have a handle on at least the basics of chess -- contact This email address is being protected from spambots. President Amy Green and the entire BNASC crew of volunteers are hard at work assuring the best possible conditions for the entire weekend event.
Side events will kick off the weekend on Friday night, followed by four rounds on Saturday and three rounds on Sunday.
As they have been at some other events, private team rooms will be a challenge at this hotel but with cooperation, the impact will be minimized. Contact BNASC (information at bnasc.org) as your group registrations take shape.
A reminder that the excellent room rate at the host Marriott is only guaranteed through February 17 -- or until the allocation is depleted.
Registration is available at Online Registration.
The BNASC hosts another of its competitions today (February 4) at Benjamin Elementary School.
