Glenwood Club Hosts Successful Two Week Boot Camp

Glenwood CampThe Glenwood Chess Club completed its first summer “Boot Camp” on August 14.

The camp was held at the Forest Field House in Glenwood. The camp was run by instructor Herbert Ferguson who is also vice-president of the club.

The students (ages 8 – 12) were put through a rigorous program of tactics and endgame puzzles in the morning, a master study game before lunch, and a tournament game in the afternoon.

“It was amazing how well the students took to the program. I saw growth in their game in just a few days,” said instructor Ferguson.

The students also benefited from the help of two guest speakers including Joe Emole, an A-Player, who gave a simul and analyzed two of the games for the kids to study. Doug Middleton, rated 1928, also visited the camp and gave a simul.

The camp was held from August 3 to August 14 for five hours each day. Trophies and certificates were awarded to all participants.

With the success of this year’s camp there are plans in the works for a chess camp next year during late July and early August.
