November Chess Roundup

During October, there were three winners in the first Grand Prix in London: Topalov, Gelfand, and Mamedyarov. Etienne Bacrot won the 16th Corsica Masters. GM Mark Hebden won the 38th Intertrust Guernsey International Chess Festival which he last did 22 years ago in 1990. Mariya Muzychuk won the 2012 Ukrainian Women's Championship.

A little closer to home in Illinois chess, here are the October results:

September 10 to October 1: The Game 45 tournament in Peoria, IL had 13 players. There was a three-way tie for first with Michael Leali, Adam Lonn, and Wayne Zimmerle finishing at the top. Crosstable.

September 7 to October 5: The Ron Washington Memorial Tournament drew 18 players. The lone chess master in the tournament, Steven Tennant, finished unscathed with 4/4. Crosstable.

October 6: Bloomington October Open had 26 players. In the U1000 Scholastic section, Tejas Katam and Garrett Trimble, drew each other in the second round and went on to win the rest of their games. This meant they tied with 3.5/4.0. In the Open/U1400 section, Andrew Fei finished with a perfect 4.0. Crosstables.

October 6: The Springfield NCD Warmup Open had ten players. Matthew Cremeens and Evan Gresen finished with 3.5/4.0. Crosstable.

October 6 to 7: The Susan Polgar World Open for Boys and Girls in Skokie, IL had 167 players for this scholastic tournament. The Boys K-3 section had Brian Gong finishing with a perfect 6.0. In the Girls K-3 Section, Gia Peterson, also finished with a perfect 6.0. The Boys 4-5, had Vincent Do, finishing with a perfect score. The Girls 4-5 had a tie of the top two players who drew each other in the fifth round. They were Shreya Mangalam Anastacia Sanchez. The Boys 6-8 section had Arshaq Saleem drawing seventh seat Rishi Narayanan but still ending up in first place. Girls 6-8, had Vanisa Saycocie losing to higher rated Miranda Liu in the third round, but when Miranda lost her sixth round game the two ended up tieing for first. Combined 9-12 had Joshua Colas, a master level player from NY, ending up in first place. Crosstables.

October 8: The Naperville Open 2 Scholastic tournament had 31 scholastic players in this four section event. The winners were: Daniel Polski (U600), Peter Ren (U1000), George Polski (U1200), and Michael Schirle (Open). Crosstables.

October 9: National Chess Day Minus Four tournament in Moline, IL had 12 players to this three section event. The winners were John Beydler, Artur Mueller, and Ben Nordick. Crosstables.

October 13: The Chicago Chess Festival-NCD scholastic tournament had 201 players and five sections. The winners in each section were: Giorgi Vanderway (High School K-12), Akash Mattu (Middle School K-8), Jeremy Margolin (Elementary K-6); Alex Yasumoto, Alexander Hsia, and Jonas Vriend (Upper Primary K-4); and James Zhang (Lower Primary K-2). October 13: Tal Division tournament in Peoria, IL had 41 players. Joyce Li won the Tal section and Timothy Mou won the Polgar section. Crosstables.

October 12 to 14: The 20th Midwest Class Championships in Wheeling, IL had 229 players. This is one of the big three adult tournaments in Illinois. The winners for the Masters Section were Yury Shulmand and Nikola Mitkov. In the Expert Section, the winners were Tam Nguyen and Robert Moskwa. Barry Manthe had 4.5 points finishing for first in the Class A section. Tian Peng had a perfect 5.0 in the Class B section. Class C had Dante Silguero finishing with 4.5 points. There was a mega-tie in the Class D section with 4 people tying for first - Eamon Duede, Timothy Mcmanus, Malik Brewley, and Henry Curcio. Class E section had Michael Spoerl finishing first with a perfect 5.0. Crosstables.

September 20 to October 18: Fall Tournaments had 11 players in this Saint Charles, IL event. Rich Kern won both of the games he played and now has two provisional games under his belt. Crosstable.

October 20: Unam Chicago Plus- Score OP had 15 players in the tournament. Tam Nguyen finished with 4.0/4.0. Crosstable.

October 20: The OP-October tournament in Orland Park had 16 players. Aidan Patino and Josue Moreno tied for first. Crosstable.

October 20: The K&Q AOIG Chess Challenge drew 46 players to this three section event. Mark Korin, Vincent Do, and Daniel Bronfeyn tied for first in the Open section. Mark Blekhman had the most points in the ADV section, and Jacob Kalinovskiy finished with 4.0 in the BEG section. Crosstables.

October 21: The October Game-24 had 6 players in Skokie, IL. Christopher Girardo won the event. Crosstable.

October 22: The 82nd Knights Quest in Northbrook, IL had 63 players. The winners in each section were Lawrence Cohen (Open), Alexander Turk (U1400), David Wang (U1000), and Enon Gurvich(U600). Crosstables.

October 23: Illowa October Blitz in Moline IL had 14 players. After 14 rounds, three people tied for first. They were Michael Ellis, John Beydler, and Steve Killian. Crosstable.

October 26: The NYCC 2012 10-26 tournament had seven sections and 28 players. The winners were: Bethany Simos(A); Matthew Tang and Jeffrey Cheng (B); Harshvardhan Singh and Shefali Singh (C); Ishaan Mathur, Brian Zheng, and Charles Chen (D); Alan Wei (E); David Keifer (F); and Nicholas Chan (G). October 27: The Illinois All Grade Championship 2012 was held in West Chicago and had 280 players. The K-1st Grade had Aaron Gan with a perfect 5.0. Stefan Muikic had the same record in the 2nd grade section. In the 3rd grade section, Brian Gong went undefeated. In the 4th grade, Alex Yasumoto won all his games. In the 5th grade, there was a three-way tie for first between Nathaniel Sobery, Tej Rai, and Jeremy Margolin. For the 6th grade section, Matthew Stevens won all his games. In the seventh grade, Nicholas Bartochowski was undefeated. In the 8th Grade, Anshul Adve went 4/4. In the high school section, Nathaniel Kranjc and Yue Xu tied for first. Crosstables.

October 27 to 28: The Oct. Game 60 in Skokie, IL had 8 players. Christopher Girardo went undefeated. Crosstable.

October 28: The Alekhine Memorial Open in Sycamore, Il had 12 players. It's possible with only three rounds to have at least two with perfect records for the day but as fate would have it there was only one. James Oberweis. Crosstable.

October 30: The Illowa Themed Tourney had 9 players converging on Moline, IL. Steve Killian, from Iowa, took the lead for the day with 3.0/3.0. Crosstable.
