On October 15, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted Chess Wars XVII. By its conclusion, Joe Anthony took first place with 3.0 points -- despite not playing the final round.
Anthony, who organizes the Tinley Park Chess Club, finished ahead of a four-way pack which tied for second place.
Via tiebreaks, all with 2.0 points, Sam Henderson and Eric Luster placed second and third, followed by newcomer Jacob Plotnick and this author.
Plotnick and Rahul Bammidi were the star juniors of the event with Plotnick raising his rating by 166 points -- to over 1000! -- and Bammidi gaining 33. Both dispensed with the tournament organizer during the course of the event.
Even tournament director Len Weber managed to play one game, eeking out a third-round victory.
After the tournament, it was encouraging to hear from both of the boys’ fathers that they felt this was a congenial and well-run tournament.
