On September 18, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted Chess Wars XVI. This tournament could have been dubbed: “The Tie Break Tournament”.
In the U1250 division, Anthony Pedragel was the only clear cut winner of the day and graciously accepted his 1st place trophy!
Theresa Walatka, Ryan Alford, Elmer Adams and Stephen Gonzalez took 2nd to 5th place respectively via tiebreaks.
In the U1650 division, Leroy Sims, Todd Walatka and the tournament organizer took 1st to 3rd place, also through tiebreaks.
In the Open division, Chess Wars XV Grand Champion, Sam Henderson took 1st place because John Porter -- who had won his first three rounds -- had to leave early. Still, Porter took second place while Eric Luster claimed third place in the Open.
With Henderson taking the section's top trophy, along with his case of pop/soda, he advanced to the GC round... just like the month before when another player withdrew. That Sam must be living right!
Bounty Hunter Winners were Ryan Richardson, Eric Luster and Todd Walatka, all of whom got a good chuckle after “whupping” the Club’s staff.
For the Grand Championship, Henderson’s luck finally ran out as U1250 winner, Anthony Pedragel won the bye and awaited the Blitz winner of Sims and Henderson.
Sims appeared to be on a mission and, pardon the pun, blitzed Henderson. He advanced to face Pedragel in a 15 minute Quick Chess fight for the GC. Sim’s momentum carried him past Pedragel for the title, with the other two settling for 1st and 2nd GC Runner Up.
First time players to a Glenwood Chess Club event, Ryan Alford and Anthony Pedragel stated that they enjoyed the format and amenities of the tournament.
